3 Upgrades to Make Your Air Conditioner More Effective

Your HVAC system makes up about half of your energy consumption, making it the most expensive appliance in your home. So naturally, you want to be able to save money where you can. The good news is that there are ways to help your air conditioner work more effectively. Doing so will help you cut the energy you use in cooling your home, and save money in the process. Keep reading for 3 upgrades that can improve the efficiency of your air conditioner, thus making it more effective.

1. Upgrade to a High Efficiency Unit

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it may very likely have a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating of 12 or below. This rating measures the cooling efficiency of your air conditioner, and today’s high efficiency units have a minimum SEER rating of 13. To increase your cooling system’s efficiency and effectiveness, you’ll want to upgrade to a system with a SEER rating between 16 and 20.

2. Go Ductless

Ductless mini split systems are a great choice to increase efficiency. They allow you to cool individual rooms instead cooling the whole home when you have unoccupied rooms. They also work remotely, so they can go high up on a wall to allow for maximum coverage of the room they’re in. Ductless systems are ideal for homes that have previously been equipped with window units and do not have existing ductwork.

3. Install Ceiling Fans

Fans of any kind can help move air and bring cool relief to a space. While they don’t decrease the temperature, air movement from a ceiling fan can make the air feel almost 10 degrees cooler. Ceiling fans are very energy efficient and can reduce the demand on your air conditioner, helping it work more effectively.
